Champaign County building fire caused by ‘active burn pile’ and ‘windy conditions’

The Sangamon Valley Fire Protection District responded to a building that was “fully engulfed” by flames in Champaign County on Saturday. The fire broke out in a storage building, located near County Road 2800 N and County Road 900 E in Dewey around 7:30 p.m. When the crews arrived on scene, they found that the building was unoccupied but completely covered by flames.

The crews conducted defensive operations, and quickly extinguished the fire. After investigating, crews determined that the fire began accidently — it started from an active burn pile and windy conditions. The Sangamon Valley Fire Protection District thanked the Cornbelt Fire Protection District, Rantoul Fire Department, Thomasboro Fire Protection District, Carle Arrow Ambulances, and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
