Broadlands Garage Destroyed by Fire

VIDEO: A family is safe after the garage of their Broadlands home caught fire Wednesday morning. The fire happened around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of McGarigle Drive and Grant Street. Homeowner Joe Gilliland said he tried to put out the fire, but it spread faster than he expected.

“I woke up at 1:30 to get ready to go to work, saw smoke downstairs, went downstairs to try to find out where it was. I opened the garage door, and it was really dark in there and really hot. I went back upstairs to get my wife up, told her to go outside and call 911, got some clothes on and went outside and tried to figure out how to do anything,” Gilliland said.

“My wife mentioned about a fire extinguisher in my camper, so I got that out. Sprayed it, didn’t do any good, she said something about my water hose, so I ran out back and got my water hose, got it around there. I thought I had it out, but then something fell from the ceiling, and I realized it was bigger than what I thought.”

By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had damaged the garage to the point that the roof collapsed.
