Bloomington council approves new firefighter shift schedule

VIDEO: Bloomington firefighters will be introducing a new shift schedule to help give them more time to recover between shifts. During a meeting on Monday, the Bloomington City Council unanimously approved a new three-year collective bargaining agreement with the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 49, Bloomington fire spokesperson Frank Friend said.

The agreement includes a new 24-hour on, 72-hour off shift schedule that will begin in January 2026. The new schedule is meant to provide additional time to recover between shifts and promote the long-term wellness of firefighters.

โ€œThis plan strengthens public safety today and ensures the long-term sustainability of our fire service,โ€ Bloomington City Manager Jeff Jurgens said. โ€œItโ€™s a strong example of collaboration and responsible planning that benefits both our employees and our community.โ€
