Accidental backyard burn sparks Peoria garage fire

Peoria firefighters quickly put out a garage that was on fire Tuesday evening. Just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, the Peoria Fire Department received a report of a structure fire involving a detached garage and shed on 1818 N. Missouri Ave., Battalion Chief Josh Martin said.

He said arriving crews found both structures actively burning. Firefighters used a hose line and put out the fire within minutes. The damage was contained mostly on the outside of the garage, preventing further spread, Martin said. An arson investigator was called to the scene and determined the fire to have been accidental, caused by open burning in the backyard. No injuries were reported, but there was an estimated $5,000 in damages.
