Rock Fire challenges firefighters as spot fires and weather complicate efforts

The Rock Fire continues to challenge firefighters as it remains active, with aircraft supporting ground operations throughout the day. The subalpine fir in the area is creating additional difficulties for the fire crew, as these trees are highly conducive to spotting, where embers carried by the wind ignite new fires outside the main fireline.

Despite these challenges, firefighters are working diligently to construct dozer lines and handlines to limit the fire’s spread. On the west side, a 50-acre spot fire emerged overnight due to winds, and crews are working aggressively to contain its spread. Helicopters have delivered water-handling equipment into remote areas, enabling firefighters to quickly apply water to hot spots and suppress heat.

Numerous dead snags remain throughout the fire area pose a safety hazard to firefighters and risking fire crossing containment lines if they fall. On the south end, firefighters are working in and around a large aspen stand, which helps slow fire spread due to the trees’ higher moisture content compared to conifers. Fire managers are scouting for natural fuel breaks, such as rocky outcroppings, to serve as barriers to help contain the fire.
