Maili wildland fire: 94-year-old woman dies; homes affected

VIDEO/PHOTOS: At 1:20 a.m. on Monday morning the City and County of Honolulu’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was deactivated as the fire was reported to be fully contained. A total of two homes were damaged in the fire as well as an unconfirmed number of smaller shed-like structures. Mayor Rick Blangiardi also confirmed on Monday, that a 94-year-old woman has died. She was previously taken in critical condition by EMS due to smoke inhalation and second-degree burns. The cause of the fire has not been determined, and no damage estimate has been released at this time.

Fire Containment
The fire was confirmed to be 90% contained at 1:30 a.m. Monday morning, with roughly 95 acres still burned. The Honolulu Fire Department reported that fire crews will remain on scene to address residual hot spots, including small fires involving rubbish piles and containers. A comprehensive damage assessment will be conducted to determine the full extent of the loss.

At 7:25 p.m. on Sunday, the fire was reported to be 75% contained and had burned 95 acres with some structural damage reported. HFD confirmed that the fire has been 20% contained at 5 p.m.

Initial Response
HFD received a 911 call at 2:33 p.m. for a wildland fire near Paakea Road in Maili and initially responded with three units with nine personnel. The first unit arrived at 2:42 p.m.; reported an active wildland fire, requested additional resources and commenced an offensive fire attack. A total of 29 HFD units, along with additional units from the Federal Fire Department worked to contain the fire. The efforts were coordinated with the City and County of Honoluluโ€™s emergency response partners including EMS, HPD, and DEM.

Evacuation Orders
There are no active evacuation orders. One portion of Kaukamana Road, between Maliona St. and the Hawaii SPCA of Maili remained closed at 1 a.m. The HFD Incident Commander called for an evacuation of an area mauka of Kulaapuni at 3:36 p.m. Honolulu Police issued a mandatory evacuation order for the location of Maili Mauka of Kulaapuni Road. Residents in the area were urged to evacuate immediately.

At 7 p.m., the active evacuations were no longer taking place and the roads in the area remained closed. Officials encouraged the residents who evacuated to remain outside the area until an update on the fire was available. According to the Cityโ€™s Department of Planning and Permitting, citing census data from 2020, there were roughly 600 homes that were in the evacuation zone.

Reported Injuries
Mayor Rick Blangiardi confirmed on Monday, that the 94-year-old woman that was taken in critical condition has died. EMS initially reported that the 94-year-old woman was taken in critical condition due to smoke inhalation and second-degree burns. Four other people were also evaluated for smoke inhalation, but refused further treatment.
