Unattended candle causes $180k damage in Ewa Beach house fire

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) responded to and extinguished a building fire that was reported on Karayan St. in Ewa Beach early Tuesday morning. HFD crews responded to the scene at 12:25 a.m. and reported smoke showing from the second floor of a small single-family two-story home.

Firefighters initiated an aggressive fire attack and brought the fire under control at 12:29 a.m. and fully extinguished at 12:38 a.m. HFD confirmed that all residents of the home were safe and got out of the home. The Red Cross was requested to help the residents who were displaced as a result of the fire. The HFD Investigator classified the cause of the fire as accidental and reported that the fire occurred due to an unattended candle. Officials reported that the estimated damage is $180,000 to the home and its contents.
