PHOTOS: Students got to experience a series of hands-on medical scenarios in the Honolulu Emergency Medical Servicesโ (EMS) five-week summer training program. EMSโ Explorers Program just wrapped up its second annual โEMS Olympic Gamesโ with 19 students, from ages 16 to 20. Participants got to manage a simulated cardiac arrest on a second floor at Farrington High School. Students also performed CPR, applied spinal precautions and transported a โpatientโ safely to a mock ambulance.
โWe want these students to experience what itโs like to work in EMS. This program gives them the chance to practice their skills, work together and have fun in a safe environment, while also planting the seed for a potential career helping others,โ said Jim Ireland, Director of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department. The free City-sponsored program is designed to spark interest in EMS careers and prepare students with basic life-saving knowledge. Over five weeks, participants were trained in a range of skills, including infant and adult CPR, wound care, bandaging, checking vital signs and administering oxygen.
