Hiker rescued from Hanakapi’ai Trail

Kauai Fire Department (KFD) crews rescued a Virginia woman from the Hanakapi’ai Trail in Ha’ena on Saturday afternoon. KFD crews responded to the trail after reports of a hiker in distress at 2:25 p.m. Officials said that the 57-year-old woman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, was experiencing apparent weakness, exhaustion, and nausea. After crews located the woman, she was assessed at the 1.5-mile landing zone and was taken by helicopter to the Princeville Airport where she was transferred to American Medical Response for additional medical treatment.

The scene was cleared at approximately 3:40 p.m. KFD would like to remind the public to plan ahead when hiking the Hanakapi’ai and Kalalau trails as conditions can be challenging due to steep terrain, heat, and limited access to drinking water. Hikers are encouraged to stay hydrated, know their limits, and turn back before fatigue sets in.
