High surf prompts hundreds of rescues across Oahu’s south shore

VIDEOS: The City and County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety Department said they rescued over 220 people on Oahu’s south shore Sunday. A high surf advisory was issued for the state’s south shores Thursday and is set through 6 a.m. Monday. Waves could rise to 10 to 14 feet Saturday, and could even exceed the 15-foot high surf warning level. Lifeguards also engaged in over 6,000 preventative actions. On Saturday, Ocean Safety said they rescued 300 people and engaged in over 3,800 preventative actions.

Surfer Ted Mucciarone said Saturday’s waves are some of the best waves of the year, but recommends caution to newer or inexperienced surfers. “I would say definitely don’t go out to Bowls right now if you’re not experienced, you know, maybe stick to Waikiki, White Plains, or just watch,” he said. “Talk to the more experienced guys, ask them what’s up, and they can help you out, make sure you’re safe. Definitely don’t surf alone if you’re not experienced. Try to make sure there’s a lifeguard nearby, but definitely today is not the best day for a beginner.”
