VIDEO: A late-evening fire forced evacuations from the Kauhale Olu Apartments on Monday night on Hawaii Island. Hawaii County police said the first emergency call came in around 10:40 p.m. The Hawaii County Fire Department responded to the affordable housing complex on Kamuela Street. A unit on the second floor of the two-story building was on fire, and smoke was spreading to an adjacent unit, said officials. Police said all of the residents made it out safely. Twelve people are now getting help from the Red Cross, said fire officials. Firefighters brought the flames under control by 11:10 p.m. and extinguished the fire at 11:21 p.m. The damage is estimated at $336,000. The cause is still under investigation.
