Firefighters extinguish wildland fire in North Kohala

The Hawaii Fire Department extinguished a wildland fire in North Kohala on Thursday. The Hawaii County Civil Defense issued a Wildfire Watch for the Kawaihae Road and Queen Kaahumanu Hwy intersection area after 8 a.m. Officials initially closed Kawaihae Road but later reopened Kaahumanu Hwy shortly before 10 a.m. Kawaihae Road is open for one lane contra flow. Firefighters contained the fast-moving fire shortly after 9 a.m. The wildland fire was fully extinguished before 1 p.m. after it burned approximately 10 acres of land. No damaged structures or injuries were reported from this incident.
