Honolulu firefighters extinguished a fire at a high-rise apartment in Aiea on Thursday that left a family without a home. The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call about a fire at the Halawa View Apartments at 5:23 p.m. on Oct. 9. When firefighters arrived several minutes later, a fire sprinkler was activated on the 12th floor of the building with smoke in the hallway.
In order to get water up to that floor, firefighters used a hydrant to secure a water supply and filled the standpipe system in the stairwells. Inside of the apartment, combustible material was found burning on the kitchen stove.
The fire was fully extinguished just after 6 p.m. No one was inside the apartment and there were no injuries reported. Seven residents were displaced due to the fire which the American Red Cross was contacted to assist them. An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause and origin of the fire, as well as to provide damage estimates.
