Sparking change: Valdosta firefighters launch Camp Blaze to inspire young women

VIDEO: The Valdosta Fire Department (VFD) is hosting its inaugural all-girls fire camp, Camp Blaze. Camp Blaze is a three-day camp for middle and high school girls to get hands-on experience and explore what it really takes to join the fire service. The camp is led by women currently serving in operations at VFD. Currently, VFD has nine women working in operations and two more in recruit school. Chief Brian Boutwell says VFD worked closely with the City of South Fulton Fire Department to develop the camp curriculum, with the hope of sparking interest early. Fourteen girls will learn about the challenges women in the fire service face, explore career opportunities as first responders, and possibly ignite their own career plans for the future.
