‘Learn from the history of them’: Woman donates historic photos to Macon-Bibb Fire Department

VIDEO: Sandra Aronson’s home is covered, from floor to ceiling, in history.

She said her parents were antique collectors in Macon, and she inherited many of those antiques when they passed away. Including two photographs she discovered in a box several months ago.

“I ran across them and I said, ‘Oh my gosh, these have been in a box all this time since mother passed away, ‘” Aronson said.

Those photos show the first motorized fire truck in Macon, and the crash that destroyed it in 1910. Aronson says the pictures hung in her parents’ den for years, but she and her sister decided they deserved to hang somewhere else now.

“I said, ‘What do you think about sharing them or giving them and donating them to the fire department?’ She said, ‘I think that’s a wonderful idea, ‘” Aronson said.

On Monday, Aronson and her sister donated the pictures to the Macon-Bibb Fire Department. They donated in honor of their parents, as well as retired Captain Jimmy McCallum, who died in June.
