Douglas firefighters train for crash rescues as vehicle accidents rise statewide

VIDEO: According to recent state data, Georgia saw nearly 400,000 motor vehicle crashes in 2024, marking a 4% increase from the previous year. Nationwide, firefighters are called to cut victims out of wrecked vehicles more than 275 times a day. To prepare for those moments, the Douglas Fire Department hosted a hands-on crash victim extrication training, bringing in firefighters from across South Georgia. Departments from Atkinson, Berrien, Coffee, Brantley, and others participated in the intensive drills designed to simulate real emergencies. โ€œWe have more than just our new recruits here,โ€ said Fire Chief Casey Wright. โ€œThis is how we learn to effectively and efficiently cut open vehicles involved in crashes and extricate the victim. The quicker we can get them out, the quicker we can get them to a medical facility.โ€
