Two people have died, and 10 others have been displaced after a structure fire took place in Wilmington Island in the early hours of Sunday.
At approximately 12:18 a.m., multiple units from the Chatham County Fire Department (CCFD) responded to a structure fire at the 400 block of N. Cromwell Road.
Upon arrival, firefighter units encountered a fully involved, working fire in a multi-dwelling unit with reports of possible entrapment. A person and two pets were evacuated from the second-story window by ladder.
EMS later transported the individual to Memorial Hospital, where they later passed due to their injuries.
Due to deteriorating fire conditions, firefighters were unable to continue additional search operations after the initial rescue, according to a spokesperson. A second person was found deceased in the structure after the fire was under control.
10 people were displaced from their homes after the incident. Officials say the Red Cross, Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner have been notified.
