Winter Springs employees honored for saving dogs from house fire

VIDEO: Seven employees from the City of Winter Springs Parks and Recreation Department were honored for their quick thinking and swift actions that helped save two dogs from a house fire in Seminole County in late July. “You not only helped with opening doors, getting people out, getting the homeowners out, but you also opened up the gates for us, allowing our crews to get water on the fire quicker,” said Chief Matt Kinley, of the Seminole County Fire Department. The fire engulfed the home, and while one dog named Rue died, two other dogs, Chacha and Snowball, were rescued. “Chacha did suffer some burns, but as we can see, doing very well today. Both of these dogs survived and are doing great today,” Kinley said.

On Wednesday, the City of Winter Springs and the fire department presented the seven workers with Community Hero Awards. Several officials, including the mayor of Winter Springs, the Seminole County chairman, and firefighters, attended the ceremony. Paul and Katty Gilhool, the homeowners affected by the fire, lost their home but personally thanked the employees and the community for their support. “We’re new to Winter Springs, and we do feel a part of the family. And it’s not just the act of taking care of the fire. It’s the communication and the empathy that went through it all,” Paul said. The homeowners plan to rebuild their home and hope to host everyone to thank them properly for the support.
