South Walton Fire District reflects on Mussett Bayou Fire five years later

VIDEO: Itโ€™s been 5 years since the Mussett Bayou Wildfire in Walton County. Now, on its anniversary, fire officials are taking time to remind people about safety and fire prevention. โ€œIf you are going to burn, burn responsibly,โ€ said South Walton Fire Districtโ€™s Fire Marshal Sammy Sanchez. Sanchez remembers the blaze that broke out during the height of the COVID pandemic. โ€œThe funny thing is that we were standing on 98 at the command post because that is where 98 was set up and we all looked at each other at once and realized Covid does not exist today because Iโ€™m not going to say you didnโ€™t have time for it, itโ€™s just wasnโ€™t something you were considering because we had a bigger issue at hand,โ€ said Sanchez. The Musset Bayou Fire of 2020 was not only large but fast.
