VIDEO: As the community risk reduction specialist at Cape Fire, Jason Orellana’s job is all about building bonds. “When we put our uniforms on, we know it’s work time,” said Orellana. “When we take it off, we tend to lie back and relax a little bit.” Orellana has grown close with firefighters and staff, but a few weeks ago, a new recruit walked onto the scene. “Best coworker I could have, I could ever ask for,” he said.
It’s the first coworker Orellana’s had with a wagging tail, four legs, and big brown puppy dog eyes. “I am probably one of the luckiest people who works here, because I get that benefit,” said Orellana. In early July, Semi, the 1 1/2-year-old pit bull-Lab mix, joined the Cape Fire Department’s squad. He was donated by K9s for Warriors. Semi doesn’t fight fires, but he fights stress. While Semi may be the rookie in the department, he’s already earned a spot in the hearts of the crew.
