1 person dead after house fire in Holly Hill, officials say

Fire officials say a house fire claimed the life of an elderly woman overnight in Holly Hill. Firefighters responded early Thursday to the home in the 500 block of Eagle Drive. They located the 95-year-old woman dead inside of a bedroom, Holly Hill Fire Chief James Bland told Channel 9. Bland said a live-in caregiver was also in the home when the fire broke out. She awoke around 2:30 a.m. to smoke inside the house and tried to rescue the elderly homeowner from the bedroom, but conditions prevented her from reaching the woman, Bland said. The caregiver quickly summoned the help of neighbors in another attempt to rescue the woman, but they could not safely do so. Firefighters arrived and made entry, locating the womanโ€™s body. A dog also died in the fire, Bland said. The caregiver was not injured by the fire, according to Bland. The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
