Trolley under Rayburn House building and US Capitol catches fire in DC, 2 people injured

An electrical fire broke out on a trolley between the Rayburn House Office building and the US Capitol on Thursday evening, prompting some nearby road closures, according to DC Fire and EMS Department officials.

The trolley was moving from the Rayburn building when the small fire broke out, but it has since been extinguished, according to a US Capitol Police spokesperson. Two US Capitol Police officers were taken to the hospital for treatment.

DC Fire officials said one person was treated for minor injuries, though USCP said no one on board the trolley car was injured.

The underground trolley is one of three lines operating under the US Capitol grounds for members of Congress and their staff. The other two lines run under the Russell and Dirkson Senate Office buildings.
