Man hospitalized in serious condition following DC apartment fire

A man was hospitalized with serious injuries after a fire broke out at an apartment in Southeast DC late Tuesday night.

In a post on X, just after 10:30 p.m., the DC Fire and EMS Department said crews were dispatched to a box alarm in the 1600 block of Independence Avenue.

There, firefighters rescued a man from an apartment. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition, according to officials. Medics also evaluated a second patient at the scene.

While battling the blaze, DCFD said the flames were contained to the kitchen. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
