VIDEO/PHOTOS: A DC firefighter and father of two is recalling the shocking moments he was shot over the weekend while walking home in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
“My older son said, ‘I heard the gunshots, and then, and then I heard a voice yelling for help and I knew it was you, papa,’” said Gary Dziekan, while sitting inside his living room adorned with family photos on Monday.
Dziekan, who goes by “Zeek,” described the harrowing moments before, during and after he was shot with what investigators described as a ghost gun.
Swallowing the pain coming from the upper right side of his chest, bullet fragments remain lodged where police say a 17-year-old suspect shot him on 8th and C Streets in Northeast.
Zeek said he was walking home from a friend’s barbecue Saturday night when he heard someone run up on him. That’s when, “I turned around and the individual, like, stopped real quick, made eye contact with me. And I think he was shocked that I turned around so fast.”
