School closed after fire breaks out at Ledyard elementary school

Gallup Hill School in Ledyard is closed Thursday after a student started a fire in a second floor bathroom Wednesday morning.

According to Superintendent Jay Hartling, all students and staff are safe and there were no injuries.

The fire was contained to one bathroom, although smoke impacted parts of the second floor.

โ€œThe fire was quickly contained to that bathroom thanks to the immediate and coordinated response of multiple emergency agencies,โ€ Hartling said.

Hartling said students were dismissed early for safety reasons and to allow for a thorough cleaning and air-quality assessment.

A professional fire restoration team is cleaning and sanitizing impacted areas. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of students and staff, Hartling says Gallup Hill School will remain closed Thursday.

The Ledyard Police Department is investigating the fire. Hartling says preliminary findings indicate a student caused the fire. A juvenile summons has been issued.

โ€œWe are deeply grateful to our first responders, Gallup Hill staff, and families for their calm and coordinated actions, which ensured the safety and well-being of every student,โ€ Hartling said.
