New Haven fire chief retiring after nearly a decade as top firefighter

New Haven’s fire chief confirmed to FOX61 News that he will be retiring at the end of January 2026 after nearly a decade as chief. Fire Chief John Alston will retire effective Jan. 31, 2026. New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said Alston led the city’s fire department with “dedication and distinction.”

“Heโ€™s been a fantastic leader and steady hand for nearly a decade, guiding the fire department through some of its toughest challenges and most tragic losses, while also improving the departmentโ€™s capabilities and working to ensure the department reflects the diversity of our city,” Elicker said.

He added that the city’s residents are “alive and well” thanks to Alston’s effectiveness as a leader. “As mayor and as a resident, Iโ€™m incredibly grateful for his leadership and service and wish him all the best in his retirement,” Elicker said. According to his LinkedIn profile, Alston was formally sworn in as the city’s new chief in late 2016.

Before joining the New Haven Fire Department, he spent 31 years with the Jersey City Fire Department, rising from the ranks of firefighter to deputy fire chief. He was a first responder to the World Trade Center as a heavy rescue technician. He’s an author and educator for first responders, administrators, and business leaders.

In a message on the city of New Haven website, Alston said the New Haven Fire Department is “committed to providing the highest quality and highest level of courteous and responsive services to the citizens of New Haven.”
