Hamden police, fire departments go head to head in annual softball game

VIDEO: Firefighters and police officers in Hamden work in tandem 364 days a year โ€” except during their annual โ€œBattle of the Badgesโ€ softball game. Each year, before their National Night Out event, the Hamden Fire Department and Police Department play in a friendly softball game against each other, hoping to build positive relationships between first responders and members of the community.

โ€œFire is going to whoop the pants off the police department,โ€ Hamden Fire Chief Shelly Carter said. โ€œThatโ€™s all I got to say. We will be taking home the trophy.โ€ โ€œWeโ€™re going to bring home that trophy man, and weโ€™re going to display it proudly,โ€ Hamden Police Chief Edward Reynolds said. Despite the friendly trash talking, both departments agreed that in the end, itโ€™s really all about the safety of Hamden residents.

โ€œNo matter the side that weโ€™re on police or fire, EMS, paramedic, weโ€™re public safety and we work together on calls at various incidents and emergencies,โ€ Carter said. โ€œYouโ€™ve got some of the finest public safety practitioners in the world right here in Hamden,โ€ Reynolds remarked.
