Guilford firefighter dies in I-95 crash; community mourns

A Guilford firefighter died following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 South in Guilford on Friday, according to Connecticut State Police and the Guilford Fire Department.

Michael Terrio, of Killingworth, was riding a motorcycle when he struck another vehicle from behind near Exit 59 on I-95 South. The crash occurred in the evening Friday. Terrio was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, state police said. The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven for treatment. State police said the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Troop F.

In a statement released Sunday, the Guilford Fire Department confirmed that Terrio was an active member of the department. โ€œFirefighter Terrio was a dedicated public servant who committed himself to protecting the residents of Guilford,โ€ said Guilford Fire Chief Michael Shove. โ€œHis loss is deeply felt by his fellow firefighters, colleagues across town departments, and the entire Guilford community.โ€

The department said peer support services would be available to members and staff coping with the loss. Memorial arrangements are being finalized in coordination with Terrioโ€™s family and will be shared at a later time. โ€œThe Town of Guilford and Guilford Fire Department thank the community for its compassion and support as we honor the memory of Firefighter Michael Terrio,โ€ the statement read.
