Guilford Fire Chief Charles Herrschaft has retired after 54 years of service to the town, according to a recent announcement from the fire department. “Throughout his tenure, Chief Herrschaft exemplified integrity, dedication, and an unwavering focus on community safety. His influence extended beyond the department, fostering strong relationships with town leaders, neighboring fire departments, and countless residents who relied on his steady leadership,” the Guilford Fire Department wrote in a post.
“As Chief Herrschaft retires, he leaves behind a legacy defined by tremendous progress and an unshakeable commitment to the people of Guilford,” the GFD added. “The department stands today as a testament to his visionโfully staffed, highly trained, and prepared to meet the challenges of a growing community.” Herrschaft began his career with the GFD in 1970 when the department was operated entirely with volunteer members. He rose through the ranks and became fire chief in 1984, according to the GFD.
Staffing levels grew under Herrschaft’s leadership, the GFD said, noting the depatment had only eight full-time firefighters in 2002. In 2025, the department employs 40 full-time firefighters and operates out of two fire stations in downtown and North Guilford. “His vision also brought a full-time deputy fire marshal and assistant fire marshal, a full-time assistant chief, and two administrative assistants to ensure the departmentโs readiness and efficient operation,” the GFD said of Herrschaft.
During his tenure, Herrschaft helped usher in a new headquarters on Church Street in 2003. “Recognizing the evolving needs of the town and surrounding communities, Chief Herrschaft also prioritized the departmentโs growth into a multi-discipline technical rescue agency,” the department noted. “Through his leadership, the department developed specialized capabilities, providing advanced technical rescue services not only to Guilford but to neighboring towns in need.” It’s unclear who will take Herrschaft’s place as the leader of the GFD.
