VIDEOS: Firefighters on Monday continued to battle a fire that started Sunday morning at the site of the former Stone Container company in Torrington. They kept an eye on hot spots. According to fire officials, calls came in around 12:45 a.m. Sunday that reported the fire.
The size of it required a major mutual aid effort. Crews from multiple towns, including Harwinton, Avon, Simsbury and Plainville, responded to help Torrington firefighters.
โIt definitely is a lot. With our staffing we had to reach out for mutual aid and a lot of it as you can see on the scene here. But, once the mutual aid started coming in, we started getting a good handle on it,โ said Torrington Fire Department Battalion Chief Patrick Doyle.
Several buildings were destroyed as the fire spread near Summer and High streets. No injuries were reported. Many residents lost power for several hours early Sunday morning. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection monitored air quality at the scene and reported that it remained safe for the public.
โWe were here at 3 oโclock this morning,โ said Torrington resident James Morelli. โThe flames were shooting up high. It was so dark out, we couldnโt really see it, but you could hear everything falling down.โ
Longtime Torrington residents said they watched the scene unfold. Some reflected on the buildingโs history. โA part of history for me is going up in flames right now. That buildingโs been there for so many years,โ said Amy Deziel of Torrington. There was no word on a cause.
