VIDEO: On July 27, the Mesa County Fire Authority hosted their annual fundraiser and safety fair. The event included a silent auction and bake sale to raise funds for wildfire resources. “The importance of fundraising right now is so that way we can build up the money to be able to properly fit our firefighters, our wildland response folk and stuff like that, to be able to go out there and fight these fires in our district,” said Kris Hubbs, firefighter for Mesa County Fire Authority.
They not only discussed the importance of wildfire prevention but also taught attendees skills to perform in case of emergencies. “We are teaching basic life saving measures. So just going over CPR, stuff of that nature. We’re also teaching fire prevention as well,” said Hubbs. This event educated people on different skills but was not a certifying class. Hubbs said it’s important for people to be prepared before help arrives.
“We are primarily a volunteer department, so it takes us time. The dead of the night, we get out of our beds, we go respond to calls. Every second matters when we’re talking about saving someone’s life, so it’s good for the people out here to know these basic lifesaving skills so they can help their loved ones when they’re in need,” said Hubbs. Hubbs says that since they are heavily a volunteer-based station, they hope to receive the support from the community that they strive to give.
