VIDEO: Shelter-in-place order lifted for communities near hazardous cargo ship fire in Port of L.A.

A shelter-in-place order that was issued in the wake of a large hazardous container ship fire for some residents of San Pedro and Wilmington on Friday evening has been lifted. The order was issued because the vessel, One Henry Hudson, caught fire around 7:15 p.m. Friday while docked at the Port of Los Angeles.

According to the ship’s manifest, the containers where the blaze started were carrying hazardous materials, posing a risk for the nearby community and the firefighters who were called out to fight the flames; they were seen wearing fully encapsulated suits and breathing apparatus to protect themselves from the smoke.

About 45 minutes after flames and smoke were first sighted, an explosion on the mid-deck of the 1,100-foot vessel disrupted power, light and crane operations, the Los Angeles Fire Department stated Friday night. Due to the situation, officials put out a shelter-in-place order for several neighborhoods of San Pedro and Wilmington, the closest communities to the port.
