New Cal Fire campaign urging residents to be prepared for wildfire evacuations

VIDEO: Cal Fire launched its new “Set, Go” campaign Monday, reminding residents to be prepared before wildfires ignite. With peak wildfire season upon us, the “Set, Go” campaign runs from August through October, urging people living in fire-prone areas to create a family wildfire action plan, pack emergency kits, and leave early when wildfires threaten their homes.

Cal Fire Battalion Chief David Acuรฑa said the first step is building a wildfire action plan, complete with escape routes, a safe meeting spot, and an out-of-area contact for family communication. “It’s a one-stop resource that people can prepare themselves and their families,” Acuรฑa said.

When it comes to go bags, Acuรฑa advises keeping them stocked with food and water for three days, medications, first aid supplies, and flashlights. “Generally, it’s going to be maybe 2 or 3 boxes, crates, or bags, whatever a family needs,” Acuรฑa said. It’s also essential to have at least half a tank of gas in your car, so you can quickly drive away from potentially fast-moving wildfires. If flames do ignite near your home, the earlier you leave, the better. It can help to avoid unnecessary panic and dangerous, last-minute escapes. “We want to make sure people understand that they have to be set and go,” said Acuรฑa. “Be able to, to go at a moment’s notice.”
