House fire in south Sacramento leaves one person with injuries

VIDEO: A person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation injuries after a fire in south Sacramento early Sunday, fire officials said. The fire happened on the 5000 block of 63rd St. just after 6 a.m., according to the Sacramento Fire Department. Fire officials located the fire in the kitchen and quickly knocked it down. The house was occupied by an elderly man and woman, as well as two rabbits, officials say. Fire officials confirm that before fire crews could get to the scene, some bystanders jumped into action and saved the lives of the man and woman inside. Lucky for them, there were two good Samaritans parked on their street waiting for their friends to get home.

“I looked back in the rearview and I [saw] flamesโ€ฆfire is the scariest thing ever,” said Ernest Johnson, the good Samaritan who helped. “Sort of dozing off, waiting for my girlfriend to get back from the casino, when I heard alarms going off, so I looked back and I saw flames. I looked back at my passenger and said ‘you think there is a fire’ and they said ‘no, it’s not’, and I said ‘yes, it is,” said Chrissy Phillips. Chrissy Phillips and Ernest Johnson ran toward the burning home. The couple managed to get the man and woman to safety before fire crews arrived. “I just panicked, I got out, and took off running over there, and there was a woman at the door, and she was just standing there,” said Phillips.
