Forward progress stopped on grass fire that threatened structures in Elk Grove

VIDEO: Forward progress has been stopped on a grass fire in the Elk Grove area that burned 80 acres and threatened structures on Saturday afternoon, fire officials said. The Cosumnes Fire Department said the fire was reported after 4 p.m. in the area of Bradshaw and Bader roads, south of Calvine Road. There are no reported injuries. A damage assessment is underway and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dan Quiggle with the Cosumnes Fire Department said some outbuildings and barns were damaged but no residential structures were. Sacramento Metro Fire crews assisted in the fight and contributed their helicopter. The Wilton Fire Protection District helped supply water since the area is not protected by hydrants, Quiggle said. He suggested that people in rural areas maintain at least 30 feet of defensible space, and “preferably 100 feet.” Grass fires get put out quickly but that becomes more challenging when they spread to trees or structures, he said.
