Father remembers aspiring firefighter from Corona who died snowboarding at Kirkwood Mountain Resort

VIDEO: Roman Lacayo, a 25-year-old from Corona, California, aspired to be a firefighter. But that dream was tragically cut short. Lacayo died in a snowboarding accident at Kirkwood Mountain Resort in Alpine County on Saturday. His father, Nathan Clardy, said Lacayo had recently graduated from the fire academy in Southern California and was close to achieving his dream. “On Thursday, we did his first application for a department he was looking at trying to get hired with,” Clardy said.

Clardy never imagined his son’s dream would be cut short. While on a snowboarding trip to Kirkwood Mountain Resort with his longtime girlfriend and friends, Lacayo fell and hit his head. Lacayo was a beloved son, brother, uncle, grandson, boyfriend and friend. He embodied what we call service above self and even prior to the fire service that was just his natural instinct was to take care of other people,” said Clardy.
