Five people die in crash near Poway that sparked a brush fire

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A crash involving three vehicles near Poway left five people dead on Friday afternoon. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. just north of the intersection of State Route 67 and Iron Mountain Drive, to the east of the city of Poway. The crash reportedly sent one vehicle down a ravine and caused a fire in the surrounding vegetation. Emergency crews who responded were able to put out the fire, and deputies discovered the five passengers who perished. Officials have not specified in which vehicles the five passengers were travelling. Firefighters from Cal Fire San Diego and the Poway Fire Department responded to contain the brush fire, which was stopped at half an acre. All lanes in both directions of SR-67 between Scripps Poway Parkway and Iron Mountain Drive were closed for several hours, according to Caltrans San Diego.
