PHOTOS: On Saturday, March 22, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) rescued two hikers who were in distress on Lost Coast near Big Flat. The USCG Sector Humboldt Bay Command Center said they received a request from Shelter Cove Fire and Cal Fire for an ‘agency assist’ to complete a high-angle vertical surface rescue. The first hiker they were looking for had fallen and dislocated their shoulder, they were bleeding and had other unknown injuries.
The USCG said its duty crew took off at 3:04 p.m. and flew 30 minutes to the Big Flat Area, about 8-10 miles north of Shelter Cove. USCG said the crew located both hikers along a steep cliff edge. One hiker had fallen over 100 feet and was barely holding on with hiking poles 60 feet above another unstable cliff. With no winds and limited power, they say the crew had to make quick decisions.
