Reported fire at auto dealership extinguished by the Charleston Fire Department

The Charleston Fire Department (CFD) said it responded to a fire at Hug Chevrolet on Friday night. The fire was reported around 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 7.

Frank Hug, the owner, said a cordless device connected to a charger on a workbench is believed to be what sparked the fire. There were no injuries from the fire throughout the evening, according to Hug.

Hug explained that most of the damage was done to tools and equipment in the surrounding area, and there was smoke damage to the service shop building and a few customer vehicles.

“The tools and equipment in that workspace were damaged by the fire. The building was not consumed in fire, it did suffer extensive smoke damage because of the heat and the smoke from that blaze,” Hug said.

Hug was thankful for the efforts of the Charleston Fire Department and other local fire departments, which prevented further damage to the building.

“They extinguished the blaze as soon as they got into the building, and it did not penetrate the roof and did not consume the building,” said Hug.

The offices and parts department were not involved in the fire, and service shop operations have moved to an adjoining building for the time being.
