Tucson firefighters battle Bryce Fire near Safford, locals on edge

VIDEO: Firefighters are actively battling the Bryce Fire as concerns grow for those living nearby. Tucson Fire Department has sent four crew members to assist in Graham County. Rosemary Gonzales, a resident of Pima, shared her experience as the fire approached her home.

“It’s pretty scary,” Gonzales said. She captured images of the fire from her Pima home, which is located near the Gila River. Despite the proximity of the flames, Gonzales chose to stay. “I couldn’t even sleep. I sat on the porch and watched it burn,” Gonzales said. Fortunately, the fire did not reach her property.

“It’s in the other direction now,” Gonzales said. Photos taken by residents highlight the fire’s scale, with black smoke visible near Fort Thomas High School and Meg’s Place restaurant. KP Maxwell, Wildland Coordinator for the Tucson Fire Department, explained the efforts being made by the crew.

“They’re working hard. They’ve done the structure protection. They got out in front of the fire, put in dozer line, then they worked dozer line,” Maxwell said. Maxwell emphasized the importance of structure protection, which involves removing flammable materials around homes.
