Tucson Fire program helping crews get cancer screenings quicker

VIDEO: The occupation of firefighting is labeled a Class I carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Itโ€™s the only occupation to be labeled as such, and the Tucson Fire Department is doing what it can to protect its firefighters. TFD is one of just three departments in the country to have a program that allows its firefighters to get cancer screenings when they need, rather than having to wait.

Itโ€™s called โ€œYour Call,โ€ a no-cost health program for all city firefighters. Itโ€™s been in place for the past year or so. TFD Capt. Nate Weber helped with its creation about six years ago, and he said itโ€™s because of his 28 years of being a firefighter. โ€œIโ€™ve seen a lot of our firefighters have cancer, and Iโ€™ve lost some really close friends to that,โ€ Weber said. โ€œIt became really, or has become really personal to me, and just taking care of our firefighters.โ€
