Stronghold Fire burns 2,300 acres; evacuations ordered in Cochise County

VIDEOS: Firefighters have zero containment on a wildfire in Cochise County that sparked evacuations on Monday. The Stronghold Fire has burned 2,300 acres as of 9 a.m. Tuesday and one outbuilding has been destroyed. The fire started near Sunsites-Pearce, about 16 miles south of Cochise, late Monday morning.

The Cochise County Sheriffโ€™s Office told residents of about 25 homes in the Sunsites-Pearce area to evacuate. They are west of Cochise Stronghold Road, south of Ironwood Road, to include Stronghold Canyon area campgrounds and trailheads. Residents of roughly 100 other homes on standby to evacuate are east of Cochise Stronghold Road, west of Desert Road, south of Eastland Road, and north of Pearce Road.

โ€œIf residents need assistance with evacuating large animals, they can call SEACOM and CCSO Ranch Patrol will assist,โ€ the Department of Forestry and Fire Management said on social media. According to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, the fire burned aggressively most of Monday because of windy weather and dry grass and brush. Tuesday morning, officials say fire activity has picked up on the west and northwest flanks, including some steep, inaccessible areas within the Dragoons.
