Phoenix hosts first-ever first responder career demo event

VIDEO: A unique recruiting opportunity was held Saturday to show people what it’s like to answer the call for help.

Phoenix Fire Department and Phoenix Police Department held a hands-on career experience with multiple live demonstrations, with the hope that people would learn more about the agencies and inspire others to join in. From car chases to fighting fires, people saw firsthand what it takes to be a first responder. “There’s a lot we do in each of our jobs and we’re trying to show that,” DJ Lee said.

It was the first-ever “Career Experience” hosted by both the police and fire departments, where a bit of everything was shown, including K-9 units, new crime-fighting technology, fire response, bomb units and more.

“We work hand-in-hand with them,” said Phoenix Police recruiter John Childress. “They’re always coming to our calls, and we’re helping them out. We’re one big family, even though we’re two different areas.”

The event comes at a time when both fire and law enforcement agencies nationwide are facing challenges with recruitment and retention. Childress says the Phoenix Police Department just saw one of its largest classes with 41 new recruits. Still, the agency is about 500-600 officers short.
