VIDEO: Family members are remembering a Maricopa man as a hero who died while saving his wife from a large house fire earlier this month. Weeks after 63-year-old Michael Blunt died after a large house fire in Maricopa, his community is continually showing its support. Bluntโs family said he was heroic when he ran into the burning home to rescue his wife and prevent the fire from spreading before collapsing in the backyard. โThatโs just the kind of guy Mike was,โ said Nick Castillo, Bluntโs stepson.
Castillo says Blunt jumped into action and did the right thing. โKnowing in his last moments he wanted to help the neighbors, he wanted to help my mom,โ Castillo said. Around 5 a.m. on Aug. 8, Blunt noticed a fire in his backyard. He ran outside to extinguish the flames but noticed they were already in his home. โThe fire had moved up into the attic, so he went and got my mom, saved her,โ Castillo said. After rescuing his wife, Blunt ran back inside again to try to prevent the fire from spreading further. It was dangerously close to a neighborโs toddlerโs room. โHe then went to the backyard and collapsed and unfortunately passed away,โ Castillo said. โThe main theory is he couldโve had a heart attack.โ
