Maricopa man dies a hero saving wife from burning home, family says

VIDEO: Family members are remembering a Maricopa man as a hero who died while saving his wife from a large house fire earlier this month. Weeks after 63-year-old Michael Blunt died after a large house fire in Maricopa, his community is continually showing its support. Bluntโ€™s family said he was heroic when he ran into the burning home to rescue his wife and prevent the fire from spreading before collapsing in the backyard. โ€œThatโ€™s just the kind of guy Mike was,โ€ said Nick Castillo, Bluntโ€™s stepson.

Castillo says Blunt jumped into action and did the right thing. โ€œKnowing in his last moments he wanted to help the neighbors, he wanted to help my mom,โ€ Castillo said. Around 5 a.m. on Aug. 8, Blunt noticed a fire in his backyard. He ran outside to extinguish the flames but noticed they were already in his home. โ€œThe fire had moved up into the attic, so he went and got my mom, saved her,โ€ Castillo said. After rescuing his wife, Blunt ran back inside again to try to prevent the fire from spreading further. It was dangerously close to a neighborโ€™s toddlerโ€™s room. โ€œHe then went to the backyard and collapsed and unfortunately passed away,โ€ Castillo said. โ€œThe main theory is he couldโ€™ve had a heart attack.โ€
