Man in critical condition after fire breaks out at central Phoenix apartment

A man is fighting for his life after a fire tore through a central Phoenix apartment late Friday morning. Firefighters were called to the fire at a complex near 35th Avenue and Indian School Road around 11 a.m. As crews were still en route, two good Samaritans went inside the burning apartment and pulled a man to safety.

Crews arrived shortly afterward and found smoke pouring out of the first-floor unit. A man in his 70s was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire while searching the apartment, ensuring no one else was inside. No firefighters were injured. Investigators are working to determine what sparked the blaze.
