No human deaths, 1 dog dead in Anchorage house fire

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A 2-alarm fire left one dog dead Thursday morning in a west Anchorage home. All other humans and pets survived the residential structure fire on Turnagain Boulevard & W. 42nd Avenue, according to Megan Peters, AFD public information officer. Two battalion vehicles, four engines and two trucks were among the vehicles that arrived on the scene. A video taken of the aftermath shows a cat receiving oxygen from a firefighter. Samuel Navarro, who was home alone during the fire, was woken up by passersby banging on his windows, shouting for him to get out. โ€œEverything rushed all at once,โ€ Navarro said, recalling the experience. โ€œI was just thinking about the dogs.โ€

With the help of the passersby, Navarro tried to save his pets by putting them into his car, but was unable to help one. One dog died during the fire, but the other pets were rescued and taken to the vet. Navarro added that during the fire, a passerby tried to steal his car. Navarro went after him and recovered it. โ€œI was like, โ€˜Youโ€™re adding more to the fire for no reason,โ€™โ€ he said. Navarro believes the fire โ€” which likely started around 7 a.m., he said โ€” was caused by a freezer his family leaves on outside.
