VIDEOS: Former Typhoon Halong made landfall overnight into Sunday. Its strongest impacts were felt in the Kuskokwim delta area. Dozens of people have been rescued, but some still remain unaccounted for. The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center is assisting with the multi-agency search and rescue operations following the storm on the west Alaskan coast, as of Sunday, according to a press release.
The Alaska Air National Guard, Army National Guard and U.S. Coast Guard have launched rescue aircraft to Kipnuk and Kwigillingok to locate and rescue missing or displaced people, the press release says. In addition, the Association of Village Council Presidentsโs Incident Command Center in Bethel has been working โaround the clockโ in response to Halong, another press release says.
โI want to personally thank our staff, volunteers and local leaders who have worked tirelessly through the night to coordinate emergency response efforts,โ AVCP CEO Vivian Korthuis said in the release. The AVCP deployed a C-130 aircraft and a helicopter Sunday afternoon to assist in search and rescue operations, the same type of aircraft the U.S. Coast Guard sent. Any individuals rescued and found to be unharmed will be transported to designated shelters.
