Five animals killed, dozens displaced in Anchorage apartment fire

VIDEO: Two dogs and three cats were killed in a fire at the Ravenwood Condominiums Friday morning, according to the Anchorage Fire Department. The fire department was first notified about the blaze at 3401 West 88th Avenue at 1:04 a.m., according to AFD Fire Marshal Brian Dean. A second alarm was requested due to the scope of the fire, bringing a total of 19 fire units to the scene, according to a press release from the AFD.

The fire was declared under control at 2:06 a.m., Dean said. It did not spread to any surrounding buildings. Crews continued with mop-up operations and locating any remaining hot spots afterwards. The blaze is believed to have been started on an exterior deck or balcony on the second floor, according to Dean. The AFD investigation unit is looking into the cause of the fire.

“We’ll probably have several units cycling in and out throughout the day,” Dean said. No humans were killed in the fire, the press release said. There were no human injuries the AFD is aware of, however, Amanda Loach, Office of Emergency Management director, says 45 people were displaced, according to Dean.
