Follow Up: Fatal Fairbanks fire spurs urgent fire-safety warning

VIDEO: Following a fatal fire on McGrath Road in Fairbanks Saturday, fire safety experts are weighing in on how you can keep your home safe. According to investigators, human remains were found inside the structure following the blaze. The fire also claimed the life of a family pet. Investigators say the fire was caused by leaving the firebox of a wood stove open.

The opening allowed sparks to escape and ignite nearby combustible materials. The investigation also showed that there were no working smoke or carbon monoxide detectors present, meaning no early warning was available to the occupant. As colder weather sets in, fire officials are urging the public to treat all open heat sources, including wood stoves, fireplaces, and space heaters, with caution.

Fire experts urge the public to clear all flammable materials, such as blankets, curtains, newspapers, and firewood, away from the heat source. Ensure that the firebox doors and seals are properly closed and in good working order before leaving the room or retiring for the night. Finally, fire safety experts cannot stress enough the importance of early detection.
