‘Enormous structural damage’ seen after fire at an Anchorage funeral home, fire department says

The Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) has confirmed there was an overnight fire at Anchorage’s Kehl’s Legacy Funeral Home on Old Seward and Klatt. Online AFD dispatch records show the call came in around 11:45 p.m. Friday. When firefighters arrived, they found the funeral home ”fully engulfed.”

AFD spokesperson Megan Peters said as far as AFD is aware, everyone is accounted for. “The building has extensive damage,” Peters said. “Part of the roof collapsed in one area of the building. The roof is essentially on the ground.” She said the fire investigator hasn’t really been able to do anything inside the building because of the danger of falling debris.

Peters said it was a difficult situation for the firefighters with how cold it was outside. “Even after knocking down the main fire in the early morning hours, firefighters on #AFDAShift continue to monitor the heavily damaged structure as hot spots continue to flare up,“ AFD wrote online around noon Saturday.
